pack it out? … to where?

So said Sir Edmund Hillary in Nepal.
Any hiker carrying their trash back from the Himalaya to Kathmandu is making a mistake. The capital of Nepal has a worse trash disposal system than either Namche Bazaar or Lukla, in the mountains.

Should we carry trash all the back to our home nation? … Think of [...]

Three Passes of Everest

by site editor Rick McCharles
I’ll try for the most difficult of the “established” treks in the Everest region.
To the seekers of adventure and authenticicity, this is an ultimate trek, that will take you throught the famous three passes of Everest , namely the Renjo La pass, the Cho La pass and the Kongma La [...]

Waimoku Falls / Pipiwai Trail, Maui

Trip report by site editor Rick McCharles.
Most tourists in Maui drive a rent-a-car to Kipahulu Visitors Center in Haleakala National Park, the end of the famed Road to Hana.
The main attraction are the so called “Seven Sacred Pools“, a name invented by some overzealous tourism marketer. In reality, the ʻOheʻo Gulch [...]

19yr-old killed by coyotes

What?
I’d never before heard of an attack on humans by coyotes, never mind a death.
This tragedy in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
… Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Taylor Mitchell was “an old soul” despite her young age …
… Mitchell, hiking alone on the Skyline Trail, was attacked by coyotes Tuesday afternoon. According to park officials, other hikers [...]

where to hike Summer 2010

Hmm. …
I’m leaning towards the U.S.A.
Possibilities:

→ Sierra High Route, California
→ Continental Divide Trail – Indian Peaks Wilderness to the South San Juan Wilderness, Colorado
→ Lake Tahoe Rim Trail, California
→ Wonderland Trail, Washington
→ Enchantment Traverse, Washington (friends loved this area, hiking it this past summer)
→ Chinese Wall, Montana
→ Maroon Bells Loop, Colorado

Comments?
The toughest option there [...]

travel insurance that covers hiking

Be sure to check your policy when traveling out-of-country to ensure trekking is covered. I’m considering a trip to Hawaii and Asia.
I like World Nomads insurance. Here are the adventure sports covered and not covered for a Canadian:
Travel Nomads A-Z of Adventure Insurance
Hiking or Tramping is covered. But not Abseiling, Caving, Mountaineering or Rock [...]

global warming to end by Christmas 2009

by site editor Rick McCharles
Today is Blog Action Day ‘09 for Climate Change. Besthike is not participating.
I’m no Climate Change skeptic. I can watch the glaciers melting better than many.
But I am a Global Warming skeptic.
Why?
Only because a buddy of mine, Brian, has been tracking the science for years. He feels Al [...]

hiking Picos de Europa, Spain – day 5

Trip Report – Picos de Europa Circuit – by site editor Rick McCharles
By morning I had no water. Looking up, my prospects for H2O did not look good.

Though my guidebook said I could find water in two places in the next few hours, I was not confident. This late in the season I might [...]

hiking Picos de Europa, Spain – day 4

Trip Report – Picos de Europa Circuit – by site editor Rick McCharles

Here I am, elated to have tented rather than staying under roof at the Collado Jermoso refugio.

It’s a long, slow, pretty 1200m (3937ft) descent. Check out the wall looking back up from the valley.

My 4km return detour along the river [...]

hiking Picos de Europa, Spain – day 3

Trip Report – Picos de Europa Circuit – by site editor Rick McCharles
This was the most photogenic day. Amazing.
I started by climbing up from Bulnes La Villa through high pasture land towards the central summits.

I was looking forward to the iconic peak of the Picos, Naranjo de Bulnes.

It’s a world class climbing [...]
